The Center’s interdisciplinary team of historians and anthropologists conducts public history and public archaeology research projects throughout the American West and the United States.

The Center for Public History and Archaeology (CPHA) at Colorado State University promotes the ethical, professional production and dissemination of knowledge about human culture and society in the past to enable problem solving in the present. We aim to provide historical knowledge to agencies and public entities that will facilitate the development of policy on complex issues relating to the environment, land and water use, agriculture, and cultural resource management. CPHA is dedicated to intellectual freedom and the deliberate advancement of interdisciplinary collaboration to produce practical results for externally funded projects. The Center thus advances the University’s commitment to research, teaching, and extension through direct engagement with public clients and audiences in Colorado, the United States, and the world.

CPHA faculty affiliate Janet Ore, Associate Professor of History, recently received funding from the National Park Service to complete the National Historic Landmark Nomination for the Ninemile Remount Depot in Montana’s Lolo National Forest. The landmark nomination, based on the site’s significance in the development of aerial firefighting in the twentieth century, will be completed by December, 2009.
